The New Orleans Saints: Not Just A Sports Team
Posted by: | CommentsItâs been a long time in the making. Unless youâve been living under a rock, youâll have noticed that something big has happened in sports history. More importantly, something huge has happened for the city of New Orleans. On Sunday, February 7th, thousands of proud residents in the Crescent City crowded around high definition flat screen TVs in their neighborhood bars. Taxi drivers stayed glued to their radios, but most had very few clients to drive around. For long periods of time, the city was deathly silent, the streets completely empty. Then something amazing would happen. Touchdown Saints! Folks would run to their windows, stand on their balconies, jump up and down on their front porches, screaming nonsensically and banging the nearest and most resonant object in triumph. All at once, they would return quickly to theirs couches, their bar stools, their standing room only viewing area, not to miss a single moment of the action.
This day, the day the Saint made it to the super bowl for the first time in their 43 years as a NFL team, was a culmination of Sundays and Monday nights that would stop a city in its tracks. The beautiful thing about the Saints is the bridges they have gapped, across racial, economic, cultural and generational lines. While some watched the game from their Uptown mansions with an NFL Sunday Ticket, others watched the game any way they could see it, crowded around a shop store window or cheering on with hundreds of newfound friends in their favorite bar. After a win, a touchdown or a momentous play, you were hugging strangers, overcome by a contagious joy. As any resident can tell you, the city of New Orleans has struggled with crime, corruption and poverty long before Hurricane Katrina. Itâs residents have always taken pride in their ability to celebrate and be joyous in the face of adversity, but Katrina suddenly put this struggle in the national spotlight. For many, it was about time for something more tangible to be proud of as a city. On February 7th 2010, the New Orleans Saints won the Super Bowl, and it couldnât have come at a better time.
While you were watching the game with your friends and family in the comfort of your own home, the thought probably occurred to you how much making it this far could mean to a city that has gone through so much. Enjoying this sports spectacle with entertaining commercials during the timeouts, you still could not begin to understand what it means to be part of the Who âDat Nation. Your satellite TV may be HD, but even with a crystal clear picture you could never truly see what the city was feeling when its citizens stormed the streets. Now take out the shamelessness of Mardi Gras and the violence of a soccer riot, replace them with love, respect and one huge collective exhale. Thatâs what it felt like.
